Follicular Study (Follicular Monitoring)
A follicular study, also known as follicular monitoring, is a series of ultrasound scans done to track the development of ovarian follicles (which house the eggs) during a woman’s menstrual cycle. It helps identify the time of ovulation—crucial for couples trying to conceive naturally or through fertility treatments like IUI or IVF.
What to Expect
Before the Scan: No special preparation is required. Scans typically begin around Day 9 or 10 of your menstrual cycle.
During the Scan: A transvaginal ultrasound is performed by inserting a probe into the vagina to visualize the ovaries and uterus. It’s a painless procedure, usually lasting 5–10 minutes.
Frequency: You may undergo 3–5 scans every alternate day to monitor follicular growth and predict ovulation.
After the Scan: Based on follicle size and hormonal data (if tested), your doctor will guide you on the best time to try for conception or plan IUI/IVF.
