Ovarian Cystectomy

Ovarian Cystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove cysts from the ovary while preserving the healthy ovarian tissue. It is commonly performed when cysts cause pain, menstrual irregularities, infertility, or raise suspicion of malignancy. This minimally invasive approach is fertility-sparing and ideal for women of reproductive age.

Laparoscopic ovarian cyst removal

What to Expect

Before the Procedure

  • Pelvic ultrasound or MRI to evaluate the size and nature of the cyst
  • Blood tests including tumor markers (CA-125) if needed
  • Fasting for 6–8 hours before surgery
  • Pre-anesthesia checkup and physical examination

During the Procedure

The surgery is usually performed laparoscopically (keyhole method). A small incision is made near the navel to insert a laparoscope. Additional small instruments help carefully remove the cyst, preserving the ovary whenever possible. The procedure typically takes 45–90 minutes.

After the Procedure

  • Most patients are discharged the same day or the next morning
  • Mild abdominal discomfort, bloating, and light bleeding may occur
  • Return to daily activities within 5–7 days
  • Follow-up visit in 7–10 days for wound check

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ovarian cystectomy painful?

The procedure is done under general anesthesia. You may have mild discomfort for a few days, managed with medication.

Will my fertility be affected?

No, the goal is to preserve ovarian tissue. Many women conceive naturally post-procedure.

Can cysts come back?

Yes, especially if the underlying condition (like PCOS or endometriosis) remains. Regular monitoring helps detect recurrence early.

Is it necessary to remove all ovarian cysts?

No. Simple, small, asymptomatic cysts often resolve on their own. Surgery is recommended only when necessary.

What type of anesthesia is used?

General anesthesia is commonly used during laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy to ensure comfort and safety.
